Starting a league, step by step

A league is a season-long container for weekly events — a persistent roster, standings that keep themselves, and sub rules that handle the week someone cannot make it. Setup takes about ten minutes. This is every screen you will see, in order.

Before you start

Four things make the setup painless. None of them need to be final.

1

Create your account

Free, and it takes about a minute. The account you create is the director account — it owns the league, and only it can edit the schedule, roster and results.

  • Sign up on the web or in the app; it is the same account either way.
  • Use the email you actually check — week-of notifications go there.
2

Open the Leagues tab and tap New League

The wizard walks the whole season setup in five screens. Nothing is final until you finish, and almost everything stays editable afterwards.

3

Pick a template

Four presets. A template pre-fills every screen that follows and you can override any of it — a "Template · Change" chip stays at the top so you can switch, with a confirmation before it resets your edits.

Custom skips the pre-fill entirely. Pick it if your league does not look like any of these.

4

Name the league and set the first week

The name shows on every player’s tab, so make it the thing they would call it out loud. A description is optional and useful for the rules everyone forgets — "2-person teams, best ball of partners", "season runs Apr–Sep".

  • Start date is your first week.
  • An end or playoff date is optional; setting it gives the dashboard a season progress bar.
  • Default weekly format — stroke play, best ball, scramble or Stableford. You can override any individual week later.
5

Add your roster

Each player needs a display name and a handicap index. That is the whole requirement — you do not need them to have accounts before the season starts.

  • Add friend — for players who already have a Bagpipe Golf account. Links their account, so they get notifications and cross-device sync.
  • Add manually — a name and a handicap. They can claim the account later with a join code.
  • Mark someone an alternate and they stay eligible as a sub without appearing in the default weekly roster.

The roster stays editable all season. Roster changes apply from the next week forward — past weeks are never re-scored behind you.

6

Choose how the season is scored

This is the one decision worth slowing down for. Everything else on this page can be changed later; this cannot.

Position points

Best for: Open weekly leagues

Each week’s finishers convert to season points by finish position; ties split. Highest season total wins. Rewards consistency and handles a field that changes size week to week — and because it ranks finishers rather than strokes, it does not care whether you scored that week gross or net.

Stroke aggregate

Best for: Member-guests and short multi-event totals

Each week adds the player’s score for that event to a running total; lowest total at season end wins. Gross or net is your call per event, exactly as it is for any tournament — most run both — and the standings read whichever that week was scored on. Simple and obvious, but less forgiving: one blow-up week follows you all season.

Weekly match play

Best for: Fixed rosters with weekly rivalry

The league is played by teams of two. Each week your team is paired against another and plays two singles matches. Points come from holes won, winning your match, and a team point for the week. Standings are computed from the weeks, never typed in.

The points model locks when the league is created. Changing it mid-season would silently re-score every week already played, so we do not allow it. If you need a different model, close the season and start a new league.

7

Flights and playoffs, if you want them

Both optional. Flights give you sub-leaderboards inside one league, so sixteen players who tee off together every week still compete for separate trophies inside their handicap band. Players are auto-assigned by current handicap and you can re-flight anyone by hand.

Flight assignment is per season, not per week. Playoffs can be a seeded bracket or a final event.

8

Get your players in

Share the league join code. Players enter it in the app and land straight on your league; anyone you added manually can claim their spot with the same code.

League-wide email invites are not wired yet — see below. Tournament invites by email do work today; leagues need the same plumbing extended, and it has not shipped.

9

Run week one

Each week is an ordinary Bagpipe Golf event — same setup, same scoring, same live scorecard. Post the week, players RSVP, scores come in, and the standings move on their own. You never type a standing.

A league is a sixteen-week commitment, so these are stated here rather than discovered in week three.
